The Best Places To See Christmas Lights Around Dayton, Ohio

If you love Christmas lights, the Dayton area seriously over-delivers. From walk-through wonderlands to cozy drive-thru displays you can enjoy in sweatpants and a hoodie, there’s something for every energy level.

This guide rounds up the best Christmas light displays in and around Dayton, most within about an hour’s drive. Always double-check dates, hours, and ticket info before you go – details can shift year to year.

1. Downtown Dayton Holiday Festival & Grande Illumination

If you want that classic “ downtown Christmas” feeling, start here.

Every year, the Dayton Holiday Festival kicks off Thanksgiving weekend with the Grande Illumination tree lighting on Courthouse Square – about 50,000 lights flipped on at once to light the giant downtown tree. The night continues with the Dayton Children’s Parade Spectacular in Lights, featuring floats, bands, and more than 100,000 sparkling lights winding through downtown.

The festival doesn’t stop after opening night. All season long, you’ll find:

  • Live music and stage entertainment

  • Gingerbread house contests

  • Rike’s department store–style holiday windows

  • Train displays and kids’ activities around downtown

Vibe: Big community energy, lots of kids, lots of tradition.

Pro tip: Get downtown early to find parking, grab hot chocolate, and claim a parade spot before the tree lighting.

2. A Carillon Christmas – Carillon Historical Park

Location: Carillon Historical Park, Dayton

Carillon Historical Park turns its 65-acre campus into a full-on winter wonderland during A Carillon Christmas. Expect thousands of lights, music, food, historical buildings lit up, and plenty of family-friendly activities.

The event typically runs from late November through December 30, with evening hours most nights. You can walk the grounds, take in the lights, and still get that Dayton history fix while you’re out.

Vibe: Classic, nostalgic, very “Dayton proud.”

Pro tip: This one can get busy on peak weekends – if you like a little more breathing room, try a Sunday–Thursday visit.

3. Woodland Lights – Washington Township

Location: Countryside Park, 895 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd, Dayton

Woodland Lights is a local favorite for good reason. It’s a half-mile paved path through 10 acres of sparkling lights and whimsical displays, tucked into the trees at Countryside Park.

Highlights include:

  • The Rieck Express train – a colorful four-car train that winds past the pollinator garden and pond

  • Santa in a historic log cabin where kids can share wish lists and take photos

  • Themed nights like Pet Night, Character Night, Date Night, and Glow Night throughout the season

Dates usually run from late November through late December with select nights early on, then nightly closer to Christmas.

Vibe: Cozy, family-friendly, easy walking – very “Hallmark small town.”

Pro tip: This is perfect if you want to stroll instead of driving. Dress for the weather and give yourself time to linger – kids love the vignettes.

4. The Legendary Lights of Historic Clifton Mill

Location: 75 Water St, Clifton, OH (about 30 minutes east of Dayton)

If you’re going to drive a bit for lights, make it Clifton Mill.

The Legendary Lights of Historic Clifton Mill features over 5 million lights covering the historic mill, gorge, riverbanks, trees, bridges, plus a 100-foot “waterfall” of twinkling lights.  It has been featured by Midwest Living, Ohio Magazine, USA TODAY, and on ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight – it even ranked in USA TODAY’s 10Best public holiday lights displays.

The flip of one switch turns everything on at once, and there’s also:

  • A synchronized light-and-music show on the covered bridge

  • A miniature village

  • A Santa Museum and toy collection

  • A live Santa that “goes up the chimney” on a regular schedule each night

The display typically runs nightly from the day after Thanksgiving through December 30, with gates opening at 5 p.m. and lights from 6–9 p.m.

Vibe: Over-the-top magical. This is the one you show off to out-of-town guests.

Pro tip: Weeknights are much less crowded than Saturdays. Plan for some walking and a bit of a wait to get in on peak nights.

5. Holiday Lights at Lost Creek Reserve – Troy

Location: Lost Creek Reserve, Troy, OH

If you want to stay in the car, Holiday Lights at Lost Creek Reserve is a one-mile drive-thru experience with illuminated landscapes and over 60 light displays along the route.

7. Light Up Middletown & Land of Illusion Christmas Glow – Middletown

Location: Middletown, OH

Middletown has two notable holiday experiences that are still an easy drive from Dayton:

  • Light Up Middletown – A long-running drive-through fantasy light display at Smith Park, open nightly from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve.

  • Land of Illusion Christmas Glow – A large-scale event with a “Christmas Around the World” themed drive-thru and additional activities on site, typically open most nights from late November through December.

Vibe: Big, bold, and more of an outing – especially if you pair the lights with some of the on-site attractions at Land of Illusion.

Pro tip: Check each site’s calendar – they sometimes have special theme nights or extra attractions on weekends.

8. Whispering Christmas – Fort St. Clair, Eaton

Location: Fort St. Clair Park, Eaton, OH

Whispering Christmas turns Fort St. Clair into a glowing drive-thru light park. For 2025, it’s operating as a drive-through event where visitors stay in their cars to enjoy the displays, and Santa greets vehicles from his gazebo. Admission is free, with donations welcomed.

Vibe: Small-town charm, lots of heart, and a good option if you’re west of Dayton.

Pro tip: Bring cash if you’d like to support the event with a donation.

9. Deck the Diamond: Winter Spectacular – Day Air Ballpark

Location: Day Air Ballpark, downtown Dayton

Newer on the scene, Deck the Diamond: Winter Spectacular transforms Day Air Ballpark into a winter experience with over 1.1 million lights and a full lineup of holiday activities for families.

Expect ballpark-style fun mixed with Christmas lights – think photo ops, concessions, and on-field light displays.

A fantasy-themed Christmas village at the Ohio Renaissance Festival grounds with lighted streets, vendors, Santa and Krampus, live entertainment, and holiday treats.

How To Plan Your Own Dayton-Area Christmas Lights Tour

A few simple moves make the season a lot more fun:

  1. Pick your “anchor” outing each week.

    • One week: Downtown Dayton Holiday Festival + Deck the Diamond

    • Another: Woodland Lights or A Carillon Christmas

    • Another: A dedicated drive-thru night (Lost Creek, Caesar Ford, Eaton, Middletown, etc.)

  2. Mix walk-through and drive-thru displays.

When the weather is brutal, hit a drive-thru. When it’s mild, do Woodland Lights or Carillon and actually walk around.

  3. Check websites and social before you leave.

Dates, hours, ticket policies, and weather closures can change. Each event has its own page with the latest info.

  4. Make it a tradition, not a scramble.

Put your top 2–3 must-do displays on the calendar early so you’re not trying to cram everything into the last weekend before Christmas.
