The Best Restaurants In & Around Dayton, Ohio
Where Locals Actually Eat (And Where You’ll Take People When They Visit)
When people think about moving to Dayton, they ask the same questions:
“How’s the area?” and “Okay, but where’s the good food?”
Short answer: you’re fine. Dayton’s restaurant scene is way stronger than it looks from the highway. You’ve got old-school institutions that haven’t changed in decades, chef-driven spots that could live in any big city, and small-town gems in Bellbrook, Tipp City, Centerville, Springboro, and Beavercreek that are worth the drive.
This guide is what we’d send to a friend who’s relocating to the Dayton area – a locally owned, mostly non-chain short list, plus a couple of strategic exceptions.
Always check websites or socials for current hours and reservations.
Classic Dayton Institutions
The Pine Club – Brown Street, Dayton
If you want the full “Dayton classic” experience, start here.
The Pine Club has been a Gem City institution since 1947 and is regularly mentioned among the country’s best steakhouses for its no-nonsense menu, dark wood interior, and stiff martinis.
-
No reservations.
-
No nonsense.
-
Just great steaks, hash browns, and salad in a room that looks exactly how an old-school steakhouse should look.
Oakwood Club – Far Hills, Oakwood
The Oakwood Club is Dayton’s other old-guard favorite – a clubby, dimly lit spot known for aged steaks, chops, seafood, and a solid bar program. Operating since the 1960s era, it’s where a lot of local “big nights out” still happen.
If you’re house shopping in Oakwood or Kettering, this is a natural “let’s grab dinner and talk neighborhoods” stop.
Mamma DiSalvo’s – Kettering
Family-owned since 1979, Mamma DiSalvo’s is Dayton-red-sauce Italian: big plates of pasta, house-made sauces, meatballs, lasagna, and family recipes that haven’t moved much in decades – in the best way.
Great when you want comfort food and a place that feels like it’s fed half the city at some point.
Jimmie’s Ladder 11 – Historic Firehouse on Brown Street
Set in an 1892 firehouse, Jimmie’s Ladder 11 is a mashup of New American, Italian, and Cajun / Creole in a big brick space with tons of character.
Good call for: mixed groups, picky eaters, and nights you want “real food” but not a white tablecloth.
Chef-Driven & Date-Night Spots
These are the spots that will impress your foodie friends – or help you fall in love with the city if you’re relocating here.
Meadowlark Restaurant – Far Hills, South Dayton / Kettering
Chef-owned Meadowlark is one of the most consistently recommended restaurants in the region – thoughtful, seasonal, contemporary American dishes in a relaxed, neighborhood setting.
Expect creative comfort food, a great burger, and a menu that always has at least a few things you haven’t tried before.
Wheat Penny Oven & Bar – Wayne Avenue
From the same team as Meadowlark, Wheat Penny leans into California-style pizzas, Italian-inspired small plates, and a strong cocktail and wine list in a rustic-chic space.
Lots of vegetarian / vegan / gluten-free options without feeling like a “diet” spot.
Sueño – Downtown Dayton
Sueño is modern Mexican from a James Beard–nominated chef, serving creative dishes built around heirloom corn and a live-fire hearth.
Big-city restaurant energy, right off Third Street – perfect for date night or a “we just got our offer accepted” celebration.
Salar Restaurant & Lounge – Oregon District
Salar does global fusion with a strong Peruvian influence, plus a serious cocktail program and two patios.
If you’re already exploring the Oregon District, this is your “nice dinner” option.
Manna Uptown – Centerville
In Uptown Centerville, Manna offers European-leaning fine dining and craft cocktails in a polished, intimate space.
Think: birthday dinners, client dinners, or grown-up date nights.
Meridien – Uptown Centerville
Right near Manna, Meridien focuses on cocktails, wine, and small plates – essentially a cozy, upscale spot built for lingering.
Pro tip: if you’re touring homes in Centerville / Washington Twp, plan dinner here and get a feel for Uptown’s walkable core.
Grist – Downtown Dayton
Grist is a modern corner café known for fresh rolled pasta, house-made bread, and seasonal salads and sandwiches, all with counter service.
You get chef-level food in a casual setting – ideal for downtown workers, lunch dates, or before/after a Dragons game.
Coldwater Cafe – Tipp City
In downtown Tipp City, Coldwater Cafe delivers one of the best fine-dining experiences in the region in a historic former bank building.
If you’re exploring north of Dayton (Tipp, Troy, Vandalia), this is your “we’re making a night of it” restaurant.
Club Oceano Seafood & Bar – Beavercreek (The Greene)
Club Oceano is a family-owned seafood restaurant at The Greene, built for celebrations: coastal-inspired menu, oysters, seafood towers, cocktails, and a nautical, upscale vibe.
Dayton isn’t a coastal city, so when you want a seafood splurge, this is where you go.
Oregon District & Downtown Favorites
These are the spots you’ll hit if you live central and want to stay close to the action.
Lily’s Dayton – Oregon District
Lily’s is eclectic, colorful, and fun – global comfort food, southern/tropical influences, and tiki-ish cocktails in the heart of the Oregon District.
Brunch, girls’ nights, and “we just closed on a house in the city” dinners all fit here.
Table 33 – Downtown
Table 33 is an “organic scratch kitchen” focused on local ingredients, brunch, coffee, and solid dinner staples in a bright, modern space on 2nd Street.
Good for: brunch meetups, remote work sessions, and downtown buyers who want to feel out the neighborhood.
Thai 9 – Oregon District
Thai 9 is a Dayton staple for Thai food plus a full sushi menu, set in a stylish multi-level space just outside the Oregon District core.
Expect everything from mild curries to “you were warned” spice levels, plus sushi, sake, and a nice patio.
Dublin Pub – Oregon District
Dublin Pub is one of the top-rated Irish pubs in the country and anchors the main drag with hearty pub food, live music, and Guinness on draft.
If you want loud and fun, this is your move.
Culture – Oregon District
Culture does global comfort food – tacos, bowls, and rotating specials – in a casual counter-service space with a patio.
Great for casual pre-drinks food before heading deeper into the District.
The Foundry – Rooftop at Day Air Ballpark
The Foundry sits on top of the AC Hotel overlooking the Dragons’ stadium – wood-fired pizzas, shareable plates, cocktails, and some of the best views in the city.
Perfect for sunset drinks, date night, or out-of-town guests you want to impress.
West Social Tap & Table – Wright Dunbar
On the west side, West Social Tap & Table is a food hall with a collective of local vendors – Caribbean, Filipino, tacos, soul food, a bar, and more – in the historic Wright-Dunbar District.
If you’re checking out historic homes on the west side, stop here to see how the neighborhood is evolving.
Neighborhood Spots, Breakfast & Sweets
Some of the best Dayton-area food is in the suburbs and smaller downtowns.
Coco’s Bistro – Warren Street, Dayton
Coco’s Bistro is a “Dayton Original” – contemporary American dishes, a strong bar, and a warm, stylish room on Warren Street.
It works equally well for business lunches, date night, and rehearsal dinners.
Mudlick Tap House – Uptown Centerville
The original downtown location closed, but Mudlick Tap House lives on in Uptown Centerville as an unpretentious gastropub with mindfully sourced food and handcrafted drinks in a cozy, polished space.
Ideal for: people who want elevated bar food, good cocktails, and that neighborhood feel.
Blue Berry Café – Bellbrook
Blue Berry Café in Bellbrook is a destination breakfast spot – big, classic plates (pancakes, omelets, skillets, waffles) in a cozy “everyone’s awake but still half-asleep” environment, open mornings and early afternoons.
If you’re house hunting in Bellbrook or Sugarcreek, this is where you debrief afterwards.
The Ugly Duckling – East 5th, Dayton
The Ugly Duckling calls itself Dayton’s local breakfast watering hole, with breakfast burritos, eggs, burgers, and comfort food served morning through evening.
It’s scrappy, local, and very much “regulars’ place.”
Donut Haus – Springboro
Donut Haus Bakery has been serving classic donuts in Springboro for decades – big, fluffy, old-school donuts plus cakes and pastries, open early.
If you’re touring homes in Springboro, grab a box and you’ll instantly understand why locals love it.
Bill’s Donut Shop – Centerville
Bill’s Donut Shop is a Dayton-area legend – open 24 hours and constantly ranked among the best donut shops in the country. Classic glazed, cream-filled, apple fritters, seasonal specials… it’s all there, and there’s almost always a steady stream of locals coming through.
If you’re buying a house anywhere near Centerville or Washington Twp, late-night (or super early morning) runs to Bill’s will become a thing.
Dorothy Lane Market – Multiple Locations
Technically a grocery store, but Dorothy Lane Market is also a legit place to grab lunch, bakery items, and prepared foods – and it’s one of the first things locals brag about to newcomers.
Think: killer bakery, salad bar, sushi, and the famous Killer Brownies.
Cooper’s Hawk – Centerville (Chain)
We’re staying mostly local, but Cooper’s Hawk in Centerville still earns a mention: it’s reliable for wine flights, big groups, and celebrations, especially if you’ve got out-of-towners who just want something familiar.
Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar - The Greene, Beavercreek (Chain)
Upscale chain steakhouse with prime steaks, polished service, and a strong wine list. If you’re celebrating a promotion, a big life event, or closing on that “dream house,” Fleming’s is an easy yes.
How This Ties Into Where You Live
When you’re choosing a neighborhood, you’re not just buying a house – you’re buying your Saturday morning routine and your date-night radius:

Look at downtown, Oregon District, Wright-Dunbar, or near UD / Brown Street.
